I’ve seen thousands upon thousands of corals over the 24 or so years I’ve been around them. Out of all that I have had personal contact with and actually had to care for, this ultra master Scolymia is the one that stole my heart. I have seen crazier things online but I’m talking about corals under my direct care. I owned this sucker for a couple years but after posting about it once on Instagram, a small, high-end dealer contacted me about it. I was so in love with it that I rejected his first offer, which was above $1,000. Sure it was more than I paid for it wholesale and the money would be nice, but this was a coral so gorgeous in person (these photos don’t do it justice) that I was quite certain I’d just never own something like this again. Under actinic lighting, it looked like molten lava with streaks of neon green and dark orange/red throughout. It looked like it was on fire. The guy came back with an offer that was as much as my mortgage and none of my clients wanted to spend that much at that moment so I let it go. Even then, I was reluctant. I honestly feel like no matter how much money I was paid for it, I’d still feel reluctant. It is the most expensive coral I’ve ever sold and I miss it.
